The Garage Project
Looking for new routes - Creating new wines
El Gordo en Motoneta (El Gordo or EGEM for short) is a garage wine project infused with a sense of adventure. Launched in 2012, by two friends Gaston Sampere and Fernando Scandura (S&S), they source the finest grapes from around Argentina to make great, fun and innovate wine.
The concept of the winery is to ensure customers enjoy the experience of drinking wine with friends. The wines are crafted with passion, to be fun, approachable and offer great value.
EGEM doesn’t have their own winery - they buy grapes from all over Argentina, sourcing the best quality and varieties to produce their wines. Leo Nuñez is the company’s oenologist, travelling the country to search for the best grapes, negotiating before the grapes are picked to ensure the best possible handling and care, before the wines go into production.
Sourcing grapes from all over Argentina enables El Gordo to constantly innovate, looking to create exciting, vibrant wines that excite youthful consumers, so they can enjoy great wine experiences with the brand.
Being aimed at a younger consumer base, permanent titles are focused on young varietals, but they also create price-accessible reserva wines and special limited edition wines. The idea is to always innovate, always try new things and to share a passion for wine and discovery. This makes the El Gordo brand a great choice to attract younger consumers in popular sales locations - such as supermarkets, online sales, neighbourhood alcohol stores, bars, bistros and wine clubs.
El Gordo’s range includes young wines, currently unoaked Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and reserva wines (Malbec and Red Blend), as well as limited editions (Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir Rose), which I believe may become more permanent titles in 2025.
The brand has been growing very successfully in the Argentinean market and in neighbouring countries. The owners are energetic, innovative and they work their brand well with passion, and commercial intelligence. As the brand is fresh, fun and funky, the wines naturally grab attention on shelf, and pique consumer curiosity. The brand is already developing a cult following.
El Gordo is a fun, fresh, and youthful brand which might suit non-traditional wine importers. The brand has great growth potential and the owners work hard to build the experience and brand appeal.
Trade Winds says - El Gordo en Motoneta is a fun, flamboyant and fun wine brand, that accepts no limits. A great wine range to share with new and old friends. Really popular on shelf
