The country is in the Southern Hemisphere wine belt - the same latitude as the winegrowing regions of Australia, South Africa, Argentina and Chile. Unlike the Andean producers, Uruguayan grapes are planted at lower altitudes, with coastal breezes and interesting micro-climates creating unique terroir. Uruguay are the world masters of Tannat, producing excellent red wines with notes of black fruit, espresso and roasted cacao, which perfectly pair with hard cheese, grilled meats and game. Uruguay’s passionate producers also produce excellent Albariño, Moscatel, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Pinot Noir. the whites are usually refreshing and deepened by notes of stone fruits.
