High altitude wines with unique terroir
Chañarmuyo wines are produced in a small village of the same name, 1750 metres high in the Andean mountains in the region of La Rioja. Chañarmuyo is a special, remote place, where condors soar, alpaca roam, and the world comes to a beautiful still peace.
The area is famous for dinosaurs, and the diaguita - Chañarmuyo’s brand symbol inspired by historical indigenous culture. This unique mountain valley has an incredible micro-climate consisting of long days with many hours of sunshine, cold nights and dry alluvial soil, perfect for making excellent wines with character and personality. It takes effort and purpose to visit, but it is worth it.
The isolated village community and wildly beautiful landscape makes Chañarmuyo a wonderful place. Visitors can stay at the beautiful and peaceful rustic hotel, and sample some incredible wines. The modern winery was established in 2001, and has been producing wines since 2005, most recently under the control of winemaker, Matias Prieto.
¨Someday, wines will be made in this valley that the whole world will speak of"
Patrocinio Carrizo, 1913
Matias is part of the new generation of winemakers that have revolutionized Argentinean wine by taking risks with precision to reflect the best of the terroir. Besides being a great winemaker, Matias is an agronomist which has been crucial to understanding the soils and climate components to make great wine.
The winery manages 100 hectares under a trellis system, producing 380,000 bottles per year with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Viognier and Chardonnay grapes planted.
The winery produces great quality at all price points starting with their incredible value entry-level Malbec, Chañarmuyo Estate (image below). There are 4 classic wines - Chardonnay and Rose (50% Syrah 50% Viognier) are unoaked, but Malbec and the Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc blends pass 8 months in wooden barrels. These wines are extensively macerated to ensure delicate extractions, producing crisp and smooth wines.
Gran Vinos (Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Tannat varietals) all oak for 12 months, creating a perfect balance between each grape’s identity, the wooden barrels and the distinctive character of the valley terroir. The result is wines of great structure and complexity.
